What is Biokinetics?
Biokinetics is the science of human movement. The main aim of Biokinetics is to identify dysfunction in the body and from there prescribe exercise to return proper function to the body. Biokinetics most commonly addresses orthopaedic conditions and centres mainly in final phase rehabilitation to return an individual back to full activity, whether that be sport related or daily functioning. Biokinetics is also used to treat other conditions such as cardiac health problems and lifestyle diseases. The exercise programme prescription is scientifically based and aims to improve physical function. Biokinetics can be applied to intervene with identified conditions or to prevent their onset.
A biokineticist is the health professional who applies Biokinetics to assess and treat an individual. They are a clinical exercise specialist or movement specialist, someone who uses the science to individually and scientifically assess a condition and then prescribe exercise to intervene/treat the condition presented.

The Process
The first meeting with the biokineticist will involve an initial consultation where a brief medical history relating to the injury or condition will be discussed. The biokineticist will then carry out a physical assessment of certain tests and measures to further assess the current functioning of the body. This usually takes 1 hour.
Follow up one-to-one sessions will be discussed and booked which will involve performing the prescribed exercises. These sessions could be 30-60 minutes long depending on the individual circumstances.
A regular reassessment to evaluate effectiveness of programme and develop further prescriptions to improve physical ability will take place at planned intervals through treatment. The reassessment involves repeating the initial tests and may include new tests. The session will take 1 hour.
